Annual Meeting

Each October, Alliance members come to Washington, DC, for a membership gathering that includes meetings of issue-based task forces, a networking dinner, and influential guest speakers from in and around the exchanges field. Participation in the Membership Meeting is reserved for Full Members and Partners only.

2014 Membership Meeting
  

The 2014 Alliance Membership Meeting was held October 30-31 in Washington, DC at the Fairfax at Embassy Row Hotel (2100 Massachusetts Avenue, NW).

2013 Membership Meeting
  

A record 154 staff members from 60 Alliance member organizations, 6 Alliance partners, and more than 50 colleagues from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) came together at the 2013 Alliance Membership Meeting (Oct. 24-25, Washington, DC) to engage in enriching discussions and continue the substantive engagement between ECA and the exchange community.

Highlights of the 2013 Membership Meeting included:

  • Luncheon remarks by Evan Ryan, Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs (shown at right with former Alliance board chair Christine Schulze and Alliance Executive Director Michael McCarry);
  • An ECA senior leadership panel discussion with Rick Ruth, Senior Advisor to the Assistant Secretary; Lee Satterfield, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Professional and Cultural Exchanges; Marianne Craven, Managing Director of Academic Programs; and Nicole Deaner, Senior Advisor to Private Sector Exchange;
  • A pre-conference session focused on enhancing cultural opportunities for program participants;
  • Two meetings of senior Alliance leadership focused on long-term visioning for the international exchange community
  • 10 breakout sessions with ECA program staff facilitating substantive and engaged discussions between ECA and Alliance members about a wide range of important topics.

 


 

2012 Membership Meeting
  

The 2012 Alliance Membership Meeting proved to be unprecedented on two accounts – its record number of attendees (150 participants from 57 Alliance members, 5 provisional members, and 6 Alliance Partners) and the unparalleled level of engagement with the Department of State.

Highlights of the 2012 Meeting included:

  • Luncheon remarks by Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Ann Stock (shown at right with Alliance Board members Jim Pellow (left) and Dan Davidson (right)
  • A panel discussion with the four ECA Deputy Assistant Secretaries Amb. Adam Ereli, Meghann Curtis, Robin Lerner, and Lee Satterfield
  • Two pre-conference sessions focusing on crisis communications and the current appropriations and advocacy climate
  • Nine programmatic task force sessions facilitating substantive and engaged discussions between ECA representatives and Alliance members about about a wide range of important topics
  • An evening reception at the Embassy of Australia

 

 

 


 

 

 

2011 Membership Meeting
  

The Alliance's 2011 Membership Meeting, held November 8-9 in Washington, DC, included 132 representatives from 61 Alliance member organizations and more than 20 representatives of the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Highlights of the 2011 Membership Meeting included:

  • A plenary address by Ann Stock, Assistant Secretary of State (R) (at right with Alliance Board chair Christine Schulze);
  • Two pre-conference sessions: a J-1 compliance workshop, and an in-depth update on Congressional appropriations;
  • A discussion with the ECA Deputy Assistant Secretaries, featuring Ambassador Adam Ereli, Acting Assistant Secretary for Educational and Cultural Affairs; Lee Satterfield, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Professional and Cultural Exchange; Meghann Curtis, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Academic Programs; and Rick Ruth, Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Private Sector Exchange;
  • Seven task force breakout sessions featuring substantive discussions between Alliance members and ECA representatives; and
  • A reception at the Embassy of Ireland.

 

        

 


  

2010 Membership Meeting

The 2010 Alliance Membership Meeting was held October 5-6, 2010, in Washington, DC, and featured attendance by 129 representatives from 58 Alliance member organizations and more than 20 representatives of the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Highlights of the meeting included:

    • A plenary address by Ann Stock, Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs (at right);
    • An ECA Senior Official panel discussion featuring Stanley Colvin, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Private Sector Exchange, Marianne Craven, Managing Director of Academic Programs, and Chris Miner, Managing Director of Professional and Cultural Exchanges;
    • Eight Task Force breakout sessions featuring substantive discussion between Alliance members and ECA representatives.

 

         

 


 

 

2009 Board and Membership Meeting 

 

The 2009 Alliance Board and Membership Meeting was held October 21-22, 2009, in Washington, DC, with attendance of 110 representatives from Alliance member organizations. In addition to significant by-laws changes, the meeting featured remarks from Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Judith McHale and Rep. Russ Carnahan (D-MO).
