This winter tuned out to be the coldest American winter in 20 years. International au pairs spending their exchange with host families in New York embraced the freezing elements by snow tubing at a local park. For many au pairs, this year has been the first time they’ve lived with snow and cold temperatures and most au pairs had not heard of snow tubing at all.

Clara Magalhaes, an exchange student from Belgium, recently wrote about the struggles she first experienced when beginning her high school year abroad and how she overcame them. As it is the case for many exchange students, making friends at a new school in a new country, and in a foreign language, was a challenge for her at first but Clara made some small changes that ended up having big results.

International students from Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil recently participated in an exciting cultural activity at the top of Northstar Mountain in Lake Tahoe, near Truckee, California, where they embarked on a moonlight hike, while learning a lot about the local flora and fauna.

No matter what country you come from, food is regarded as a way of bringing people together and sharing something integral to your personal culture. And food recently brought together a group of au pairs who gathered at an international potluck to learn more about each other's culinary cultures and enjoy yummy treats from all over the globe.

Crowds lined up at the end of the Philadelphia finish line cheering the racers home November 17th. At the finish line, more than 30,000 marathon and half marathon participants were greeted by Au pairs volunteering for the American Cancer Society, handing out race bags full of snacks and gifts.

Close to a dozen Au pairs participated in the event. The countries represented were Brazil, China, Columbia, Salvador, Ecuador, Germany, Panama, South Africa, and Mexico. Au pair Ophelia Mengting He from China said about her experience:

Anil Mocan was a J-1 intern at The Hyatt Regency in St. Louis. Before his program completed at the close of 2013, Anil from Turkey was able to visit Cape Girardeau, Missouri and take part in CENET’s Culture in the Community program, an initiative aimed to bring international awareness to local residents.
