House sign-on letter in support of exchange funding in FY13

On Alliance Advocacy Day, Nancy Neill, vice president of the Fulbright Association, walked into the office of Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA), armed with her status as a constituent and an Alliance position paper on maintaining robust funding for State Department exchanges. She walked out with something else: a commitment from Rep. Johnson’s office to lead a Congressional sign-on letter supporting exchange funding.

Ms. Neill’s conversation built on a successful visit to the same office two weeks earlier by leaders of the Georgia Council for International Visitors during the NCIV National Meeting.

The result of this advocacy is a sign-on letter to the leadership of the House Appropriations Committee, requesting $598.8 million for State Department exchanges in FY 2013. The letter is signed by 52 Members of Congress. In these difficult budget times, this letter is a significant accomplishment.

In addition to the Fulbright Association and NCIV, the Alliance would like to thank all other member organizations who energized grassroots support for this effort, and everybody who wrote or called their Representatives urging them to sign the letter.

If your member of Congress signed the letter, we encourage you and your staff/members to take a moment to send a thank you. A thank you letter is available on the Alliance website and can be sent electronically:
