Exchange programs administered under the U.S. Department of State are being pushed to give special consideration to applicants from regions and populations susceptible to foreign manipulation, as stated in an amendment to the Senate's National Defense Authorization Act (S.2943).

The symposium, convened by Global Cities, Inc., brought together educators from 25 U.S.

International education and exchange are vital to U.S. diplomacy and allow students to acquire valuable skills and become leaders in their respective professions, Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) Evan Ryan told The PIE News in a recent interview.

Exchanges will play “a unique and critical role” in the normalization of U.S.-Cuban relations, Assistant Secretary for Educational and Cultural Affairs Evan Ryan said in her opening remarks for a symposium at George Washington University on Wednesday.

The U.S. Department of State announced that it will launch a study abroad branch to increase diversity among study abroad participants, build partnerships with foreign governments, and promote opportunities in non-traditional destinations, The Pie News reports.

Evan Ryan, the Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs, noted the State Department’s desire to increase diversity in study abroad participation and efforts in building partnerships:

The Senate confirmed earlier today the nomination of Evan Ryan to be Assistant Secretary for Educational and Cultural Affairs at the Department of State, CQ.com and The Hill both report. President Obama nominated Ms. Ryan for the post in early July, and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (SFRC) held her confirmation hearing on July 30. The SFRC approved her nomination last week, leading to today’s full Senate confirmation.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee (SFRC) approved by voice vote this afternoon the nomination of Evan Ryan to be Assistant Secretary for Educational and Cultural Affairs at the Department of State, CQ.com reports. Ms. Ryan's nomination next heads to the full Senate for a final confirmation vote. It is unclear at this time when that vote might take place. 

In a Senate confirmation hearing this afternoon (July 30), Evan Ryan, President Obama’s nominee for Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), said that exchanges “capitalize on American strengths and appeals,” and that ECA is “the lifeblood of public diplomacy”.

Speaking before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Ryan underlined the powerful role people-to-people exchanges play in advancing U.S. public diplomacy and foreign policy goals.
